What is it?
Voice Over IP simply describes making telephone calls over the Internet Protocol. This technology is used by many large and small companies to communicate between sites, or from a site to a remote worker who may be working at home.
How does it work?
The telephone call is converted into data and then sent along a piece of wire (commonly broadband) connecting two sites. The call is then reconnected at the other end and changed back into a voice call and the two persons can talk to one another.
Why should we use it?
As voice is converted into data, this means that only one link between sites is required. This is because the voice and data can now be sent together.
This has the advantage of saving money on leased line rental or a kilostream circuit connecting the two sites. This technology can have advantages for remote staff working at home or out of the office, as they can become remote virtual extensions on the telephone system. The remote worker will normally connect using the internet via broadband or ADSL.
What are the benefits of Voice over IP?
- Connection of remote workers to enable calls to and from the office at no extra cost
- Integration of IP applications with telephones for uses such as Screen Popping
- Connecting sites together at no extra call cost
- Easier system administration and better control of your communications
When should I do it?
The technology is readily available now, and many companies are already using Voice Over IP to improve the efficiency of their businesses, and generate cost savings.
How can I get it?
Most telephone system manufacturers now have a Voice Over IP system.
MTL supplies and installs Mitel, Siemens, Panasonic which all offer Voice over IP solutions.
